Creating Accessible Civic Spaces, U.S. Web Design System Monthly Call, May 2024 (Virtual)

Join the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) team on Global Accessibility Awareness Day. Guest speaker Whitney Quesenbery will discuss her work to create a more accessible voting process. She previously served as a member of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s Technical Guidelines Development Committee and helped draft versions 1.0 and 1.1 of the Voluntary Voting System Guidelines. Whitney’s experience advocating for people with disabilities can help you design usable and accessible civic spaces on the web and beyond. This event is best suited for: Designers, product owners, developers, and accessibility specialists of all levels. Anne-Marie Lloyd is a designer from Washington, DC with a background in design consulting and market research. Currently a Human-Centered Design Analyst on federal CMS project MEARIS at Softrams, and with experience in both the private and federal sector, Anne-Marie advocates for accessibility research and practices as an essential component of good design. Carrie Mullens is a Senior Accessibility SME with more than 20 years of experience who takes pride in providing the best accessibility assessments possible. As a Senior Accessibility SME, her goal is to increase and spread her knowledge of accessibility. Gizem Serifoglu is a seasoned designer with 15 years of experience dedicated to crafting human-centered brand experiences. As a Senior Human-Centered Designer, she excels in fostering meaningful connections between people and products, guiding project direction, style, and tone to ensure an engaging and empathetic user experience. [HILTON] Panel Discussion: Utilizing Technology with Disabilities (In Person)

The afternoon session will consist of a panel discussion on the topic of utilizing technology with disabilities. The panelists will have a diverse range of invisible disabilities, and Cyril will lead the discussion. We will prepare the questions in advance and share them with the participants.

ChargePoint GAAD (In Person)

ChargePoint’s first GAAD event. We have a hackathon going on in the EU timezone focused on A11Y QA of our new admin portal. In ChargePoint HQ in Campbell, we will host a get-to-know-accessibility presentation, showing some common situations where ChargePoint hardware and software crosses paths with disabled users trying to use it. We have EV charging stations and software behind them. We will show some YouTube videos demonstrating how wheelchair users get in and out of cars, and their experience with charging stations. We’ll show how blind people use an ATM as an introduction to problems ChargePoint needs to solve for our own visually impaired users. We will show-case some of the ongoing work in ChargePoint to address these issues.
