We have our monthly Day of Learning, which is the 3rd Thursday of the month. So to coincide with GAAD, we are making this Day of Learning Accessibility-themed!
We have four sessions:
- Joe Devon, the Story of GAAD. Joe will share the origins of GAAD and how it has grown into such a global, energizing event inspiring accessibility awareness. We are excited to host Joe for this internal talk!
- Keyboard Navigation, Shortcuts, and Accessibility: Do you know the difference between keyboard navigation and shortcuts? Keyboard interactivity on a website can greatly expedite a user’s efficiency–or so we think. This session hosted members of our very own Accessibility Design and Engineering teams at GitHub will talk about the difference between keyboard navigation versus shortcuts, how to avoid common pitfalls when creating shortcuts, and how to create scalable solutions that benefit all GitHub users.
- Neurocats, the Community of Belonging (CoB) aims to give neurodivergent Hubbers a voice at GitHub. Owen Niblock will discuss some ways GitHub employees can build websites with Neurodivergent folk in mind and then we’ll have a round-table chat about that subject with Neurocats and Accessibility team members.
- Making your README Accessible
We will have a 30-minute guided session for GitHub employees to show how to use tools like browser extensions or GitHub Actions to check their markdown content like README files for accessibility. We will build in time for people to test and fix their README, and help make GitHub a more inclusive and accessible platform!
Join the Product Accessibility team as they share stories from fellow employees related to Accessibility and disability inclusion. Also learn about opportunities for everyone to join the movement to make more accessible products, experiences and conversations! Details on COMET.
In honour of Global Accessibility Awareness Day and in collaboration with Accessibility Services (Blundon Centre), CITL’s Learning Technology Coaches would like to invite Memorial University’s instructional staff to participate in an accessibility document review process. Using best practices as outlined by WebAIM, coaches will use accessibility checklists for Word, PowerPoint and PDF documents to review documents and highlight items that can be adjusted to make it more accessible. These checklists focus on the accessible use of headings, appropriate inclusion of tables, images and other formatting features. This event is open only to instructional staff at Memorial University of Newfoundland Labrador.
ETS will be commemorating GAAD with 3 days of events, including hybrid talks and accessibility exhibits and demonstrations for ETS staff.

Mercado Libre is celebrating the Global Accessibility Awareness Day for the 2nd consecutive year with a series of dedicated talks so that more and more people, more teams and more products will become aware of the importance of avoiding and solving accessibility barriers starting out with the little decisions we make every day to impact people’s experience. The event consist of 7 internal talks and a Q&A designed for all profiles: Product, User Experience, User Research, Content and Developers. What a better day than GAAD to stop for a moment and start putting this aspect of our products into practice to continue with Mercado Libre’s mission: democratizing commerce, money and financial services in LATAM.

Under the theme of “keeping technology accessible for everyone” a2i and Friendship shall organize a variety of events aimed at promoting awareness and education around the importance of accessibility and inclusion. From virtual conferences to social media campaigns, a2i and Friendship are pulling out all the stops to make this year’s GAAD celebration one to remember.
Since the end of 2022, we started the initiative with the goal to provide all our users the same equal experience on our digital communication channels, such as the external websites and the internal channels. We are actively working on increasing awareness about digital accessibility in the organization through newsletters, videos, and webinars. A second part of the initiative focuses on enhancing the knowledge and competence of our editors, developers, and designers’ community by providing them sessions with an accessibility expert and an eLearning. Finally, we also improved some aspects of our websites and build an accessibility roadmap. To strengthen the message we’ll publish on May 18th our accessibility statement on our external websites.
