Looking forward to another great Global Accessibility Awareness Day meet-up, this time hosted by our homies at Ogma Brewing, in Jackson, MI. GAAD is all about promoting conversations about accessibility, and creating awareness around digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities. It is always a highlight for us at Level Access, and I am looking forward to hosting this meetup at one of my favorite local spots. Bring someone with you, and share a story. Das Interesse, Technologien für Menschen mit Behinderungen zugänglich und nutzbar zu machen, ist bei vielen Unternehmen bereits vorhanden. Allerdings besteht oft Unsicherheit darüber, welche Schritte und Ressourcen dafür erforderlich sind. Mit unserer Veranstaltung möchten wir daher nicht nur verdeutlichen, wie wichtig Barrierefreiheit für alle Nutzer:innen ist, sondern auch ganz konkrete Vorgehensweisen aufzeigen, wie Barrierefreiheit umgesetzt wird und dass dies nur im Team gelingen kann. Nach einer einleitenden Impulsevortrag werden die Teilnehmenden in Kleingruppen aufgeteilt. Gemeinsam identifizieren sie Barrieren auf einer Website und lernen dabei Anforderungen, Checklisten und Prüfwerkzeuge kennen. Die Gruppenarbeit ist als Rollenspiel konzipiert, wodurch verschiedene Perspektiven im Entwicklungsprozess hervorgehoben werden. Dies fördert den spielerischen Austausch über die vielfältigen Anforderungen der Barrierefreiheit. Während der Gruppenarbeit stehen den Teams Barrierefreiheits-Expert:innen zur Seite. „Welches Tool kann ich benutzen? Was muss ich beachten? Wie kann ich eine Barriere identifizieren? – mit diesen und weiteren Fragen werden sich die Teilnehmer:innen in unserem Workshop auseinandersetzen. Im Anschluss an die Kleingruppenarbeit werden die Erkenntnisse präsentiert und diskutiert. Jedes Team stellt seine Konzepte vor, die anschließend durch alle Teilnehmenden bewertet werden.

This year’s accessibility exposition provides an opportunity for vendors in the accessibility space to showcase products or services to individuals who may benefit from them. There is also an informational opportunity to hear what other organizations are doing in the world of accessibility, how Signal Centers’ Assistive Technology Services is serving the Chattanooga community, and ways to get further involved in the Signal Centers Accessibility Taskforce.
Founded by the Northern Territory peak body for people with disability, the “All Abilities Expo” is a unique and interactive event that connects people with disabilities, carers, guardians, and families with disability service providers, community services, and government. The expo provides the opportunity to learn more about what is available in the Northern Territory, discuss individual requirements, and enable individual rights to choice and control. The expo also provides an opportunity to showcase presentations that promote inclusion, accessibility, equity, and diversity as a means of building awareness on the day. In promoting equity, admission to the “All Abilities Expo” is FREE to the community and includes “come n’ try” activities like wheelchair basketball, rugby, AFL, dance, craft, chess, as well as sensory stations, an animal petting area, face painting, balloon artist, and free food. As part of raising awareness, the “All Abilities Expo” is running on Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) as a way of spotlighting current programs and businesses that are inclusive and accessible, as well as promoting the opportunity for others to make the move towards inclusion, accessibility, equity, and diversity.

Access Living partners with Disability:IN Chicagoland for a discussion on Inclusive Design Thinking led by Bridget Hayman, Communications Director at Access Living. Access Living Board members and Disability:IN Chicagoland corporate partners will learn about design thinking which leads to the development of products and services that can be used by a broad range of people. The Digital Accessibility Office is hosting a conference-style event in celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). We are pleased to welcome David DeNotaris, author of “Feeling Your Way Through Life: A Journey Through Challenges, Insights and Possibilities” as our keynote speaker. He will be sharing his personal journey and discussing the importance of accessible technology as a foundation for education and employment. The keynote presentation will be followed by workshops, including a demonstration of Apple’s accessibility features from Jeff Bigham, and a panel discussion with guests from Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and others about accessibility initiatives in our region.
