This event promotes Global Accessibility Awareness Day within our popular Spark Reading app. For this year’s GAAD, we are featuring a story in our app about Tess, one of the characters in our school-aged series about the Away From Keyboard club. In this story, Tess and her Bernese Mountain Dog Solomon roll down to the lunchroom to talk to the kindergarten classes about her wheelchair and how to behave around service dogs. Together we can build a world that’s accessible for everyone. Everybody is included and invited in the stories of our app!

Join the California Community Colleges Accessibility Center for our annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) workshop. This year’s theme, “Raising the Floor: Building a Culture of Access and Equity,” is all about shifting from basic compliance to a true institutional commitment to our learners. We are proud to feature a collaboration with presentations representing all three California Higher Education systems (CCC, CSU, and UC).

UMBRAAD (Umbraco Accessibility Awareness Day) is a free, virtual event held each year on Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). We bring together developers, content editors, marketers, and digital leaders to explore how we can make the web more inclusive—within Umbraco and beyond. Through expert-led talks, live demos, open panels, and fireside chats, attendees will discover tools, techniques, and strategies to improve digital accessibility for people with visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive disabilities.

GAAD 2026 will include a keynote presentation from Dr. Shanna Kattari titled “At the Intersection of Access and Justice” and several breakout sessions in the areas of building accessible digital experiences, accessible content & communication, and advancing accessibility practices.

Over the past decade, global policy discourse has increasingly focused on expanding “internet access” as a cornerstone of digital inclusion. Yet for persons with disabilities, connectivity alone does not translate into meaningful participation. A user may be connected, possess a device, and have basic digital skills—and still remain excluded due to inaccessible design, incompatible platforms, or poorly implemented technologies. This gap calls for a conceptual shift: from access to agency. At the same time, the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into digital ecosystems is reshaping how users interact with technology. AI-powered tools—such as automated captioning, voice interfaces, and assistive agents—hold transformative potential. However, they also introduce new risks, including bias, unreliable outputs, and inaccessible design layers that may deepen exclusion if left unaddressed. Against this backdrop, accessibility must be reframed not as a technical afterthought, but as a governance, rights, and development issue—central to debates on AI, digital public infrastructure, and inclusive innovation.
